Ever the optimist, McKay football coach Jay Minyard has plenty to smile about this season.
Four of the Scots' five starting linemen are back on the offensive side of the ball, as are some key skills players to give McKay an experienced returning team.
Seniors Phil Garibay (5-10 245), Deontay Marin (6-1 270), Andy Ridderbusch (5-10 220), and Josh Brown (6-4 290) all return for McKay. They should receive a breather from fellow senior Gord Nicodemus (6-3 215) and junior Victor Hernandez (5-10 265).
Halfback Remeco Bose (5-8 175), who rushed for nearly 500 yards in 2005, and fullback Steve Kuenzi (5-9 180) are also back for their senior seasons.
At quarterback, multi-talented Matt Kirschner will take over after starring as an honorable mention all-league receiver last season. Kirschner will be without the pass catching talents of fellow all-league receiver Reese Smith, who will miss the year with a back injury. The Scots will have seniors Scott Carriger (5-9 150), and juniors Gil Salcido (5-8 150) and Jeremy Horton (5-9 185) as targets.
On the defensive side for McKay, Nicodemus and Hernandez will anchor the line. At linebacker, Horton will be joined by Lewis Wolske (5-9 175 Sr.), Jacob Domeyer (6-2 175 Jr.), and hard hitting Solomon Frank (5-10 180 Jr.).
The secondary will be anchored by Kyle Evans (5-11 155), who returns at corner. Bose, and junior John Brewer (5-10 160) will also be in the mix for McKay.
On special teams, Kirschner will handle the punting duties, while junior Cole Mahaffey is expected to be the place kicker for the Scots.
Minyard says his experienced team is small in numbers, so staying healthy will be a factor in his team staying competitive for a playoff spot.
