A highly anticipated showdown is brewing this coming week after wins by Redmond and West Salem in week three of Central Valley Conference football action. All teams will play on Thursday night due to Oregon's statewide teacher inservice day on Friday.
West Salem 43, South Salem 10
The fourth ranked Titans spoiled South Salem's homecoming festivities by dominating the second half to break open a tight contest.
West Salem scored on their opening drive, covering 50 yards on just seven plays to take an 8-0 lead. Jordan Jenkins scored on a one yard run with midway through the first quarter.
West Struck again less than four minutes later as Titan quarterback Aaron Hire found Jake Simpson along the sideline for an 82 yard TD pass, to make it 15-0 Titans.
After South made it 15-3 on a 22 yard field goal by Josh Kay, the Titans mounted a ten play, 86 yard drive, capped off by a 14 yard TD romp by Thomas Hoover to push the lead to 22-3 with 7:25 left until halftime.
South Salem made things interesting to close the half, as quarterback Jonathan Sigado engineered an 11 play, 59 yard drive in just 1:13 seconds--scoring himself on a three yard scramble to cut the Titan advantage to 22-10 at half time.
In the second half, it was all West Salem, as the Titan defense limited the Saxons to just 40 yards of offense in the final two quarters.
After Jenkins returned the second half kickoff 70 yards to the South Salem 30, the Titans tok just three plays to add another score, as Jenkins ran it in from nine yards out to push the lead to 29-10.
South started their next drive in promising fashion, driving into West Salem territory, but Sigado was picked of by defensive back Steven Ellis, who returned the ball to the Titan 45. 12 plays later, Hire hit tight end John Gallagher with a 10 yard TD pass to push the Titan advantage to 36-10 with 7:47 left in the third quarter.
West added one more score with just under 11 minutes left in the game. After South had held on downs deep in their own territory, the Saxons roughed Titan punter Ryan Allen to give the ball back to West. Titans took advantage as Hire snuck it into the end zone on a one yard run for the final scoring of the night.
On the evening, Hire passed for 182 yards and two touchdowns on 10 of 18 attempts for West, while Jenkins rushed for 95 yards on 17 carries. Sigado had 157 passes on 14of 27 attempts, but was also intercepted twice. Corey Bickler topped the Saxon rushing attack with 73 yards on 16 carries.
South Salem (1-2 in CVC play) travels to McKay next Thursday night, while West Salem (3-0) hosts Redmond.
Redmond 21, McNary 7
The host Panthers rode the strong arm of quarterback Cody Johnson and used a stifling defense to limit McNary's injury-riddled offense to post the two touchdown victory and remain undefeated in CVC play.
Johnson was 11 of 19 passing for 213 yards for the game, throwing touchdown passes to Christian Arsenault (2) and tight end Ian Ronzoni.
McNary scored first in the game on a six yard TD pass from quarterback Brent Williams to Dustin Boyd near the end of the first quarter.
Redmond responded with a drive of their own, as Johnson hit Arsenault with a 13 yard TD reception with 9 1/2 minutes in the first half to make it 7-7.
Redmond used a McNary mistake to take the lead late in the first half, when Clayton York intercepted a Williams pass and returned it to the Celtic 35 yard line with just over a minute left. Johnson found Arsenault for a 34 yard TD pass just moments later to give Redmond their halftime lead.
In the second half, both teams struggled offensively, as Johnson threw back-to-back interceptions in the third quarter. but McNary, playing without receiver Zach Brown and running back Steven Rodriguez, could not mount any offensive threat at all--and ended the game with just 116 yards to total offense to 365 yards for the Panthers. Johnson's TD pass to Ronzoni was the only scoring of the half.
McNary running back Sam Wilkerson had 87 yards on 13 carries to pace the Celtic offensive attack--but had just 25 yards in the second half. Clayton York had another strong rushing game for Redmond with 126 yards on 18 carries.
Redmond (2-0 in CVC action) travels to West Salem next week, while McNary (1-1) is at Sprague.
McKay 44, North Salem 21
The upstart Royal Scots (2-1 in the CVC) remain contenders for a Central Valley Conference playoff slot after a convincing win at North Salem.
The McKay rushing attack rolled up 308 yards, while the hard-nosed McKay defense held the host Vikings under 50 yards on the ground, while recording 13 tackles for a loss, including a safety on Solomon Frank's tackle of North quarterback Casey Reyes in the end zone in the second quarter.
McKay led 30-6 at half.
Tony Gonzales topped all rushers on the night with 144 yards on 13 carries for McKay--including TD runs of 23 and 21 yards. For North, Reyes completed 5 of 19 passes for 145 yards, including a 25 yard TD pass to Corbin Garner in the third quarter.
McKay hosts Sprague next Thursday, while North (0-3) hosts Rex Putnam in next week's non-league contest.
Sprague 35, Lakeridge 21
A 6 yard TD run by Tony Wilson got things started for the Olympians, who broke a three game losing streak with a non-league victory at home against Lakeridge of Lake Oswego.
The Olys led 21-6 at halftime and 35-14 late in the fourth quarter, using strong defense to limit the Pacer offensive attack. Wilson topped the Oly's 235 yard rushing attack with 68 yards on 11 carries. Tyson Giza had two 11 yard TD runs for Sprague.
THe Olympians will entertain McNary in Central Valley Conference play next Thursday, looking for their first conference victory of the season.
