With one week to go in Central Valley Conference football action, two league slots in the OSAA 6A playoffs are now confirmed. One other will be decided with Friday's night's games, but the last spot may have to come down to heads or tails.
West Salem is the top seed, regardless of whether they win at McNary, and Redmond is a lock as the CVC's second place entry heading into their finale' at home against North Salem.
But depending on the outcome of the South Salem at Sprague showdown, three athletic directors might be getting together for a coin flip.
Any such random selection process will be avoided if the 2-3 Olympians prevail at home over the 3-2 Saxons. Sprague and South would have identical records, and the Olys would get the number three seed; South Salem, the fourth slot.
It's quite a different story if South Salem pulls off the win at Olympic Stadium and McNary loses as expected to fourth-ranked West.
South would receive the number three seeding, but it leaves Sprague in an unbreakable tie with McKay and McNary at 2-4. The Olys beat McNary earlier this season, McNary beat McKay and the Scots beat Sprague--and none of the teams would have beaten any one above them.
That leaves the coin flip scenario. Sprague Athletic Director Fred Romero says he and fellow ADs Ron Richards (McKay) and Mike Maghan (McNary) would meet no later than Saturday to flip coins together.
"We'd flip three coins," Romero said. "The odd man would be the winner--i.e. two heads, one tail, tails wins (the playoff spot)."
The winner of the flip would earn the right to play at second-ranked Jesuit--the defending state champions. Not exactly the grand prize, but it does provide an extra week of football.
CVC Notes
If South Salem wants to win at Sprague, the team will need to clean up its act in terms of penalties. The Saxons were whistled for 13 penalties for a total of 100 yards last week against McNary. The visiting Celtics didn't fare any better, with 11 penalties for 108 yards. I haven't seen so much dirty laundry since two of my daughters came home from college on the same weekend.
Call Sprague fullback Tony Wilson a scoring machine. Wilson rushed for 163 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries in last Friday's victory over North Salem. For the year, Wilson has 14 TDs--best among CVC players. Touchdown Tony also had a decent game on defense against the Vikings--scooping up two fumbles.
