Last season, the McKay Royal Scots rode the strong legs of all-conference running back Romeo Bose to a spot in the 6A playoffs. This year, Bose and his 1300 yards are gone, but coach Jay Minyard is as optimistic as ever about his team’s chances in the Central Valley Conference.
Experienced backs return to try and fill the rushing void for McKay. Powerful senior Solomon Frank is expected to receive the ball plenty at full back, after rushing for just 150 yards last year. Speedy Tony Gonzales, a state placer in the 100 meter dash last spring as a sophomore, should provide plenty of quickness for the outside running attack. Jeremy Horton (5-10 190 Sr.), who missed much of last season due to injury, should also see plenty of time in the backfield.
Senior lefty John Brewer will operate the McKay spread offense. The senior will have some fast performers to throw to. Junior Nassar Abdelrasul (5-9 160) , seniors Cole Mahaffey (5-8 155) and Jake Dewilde (6-2 180), and elusive Deerik Crockett (5-8 160 Sr.) will work in at wide receiver, while Frank will also get passes out of the backfield for McKay.
The Scot offensive line boasts some experience. Center Brandon Norbeck (5-9 230 Sr.) and guard Michael Emerson (5-10 210) are back, along with big Victor Hernandez (6-0 260 Sr.) at tackle.
McKay’s defense also has plenty of veteran players back. Hernandez (an HM all-conference pick), Emerson, and part time starter Tyler Roberts (6-1 200) are back on the defensive line and will receive support from junior Tyler Elsnick (6-3 205).
At linebacker, Frank brings back all-conference honors inside, along with Horton and last year’s defensive captain, senior Jacob Domeyer (6-2 190)--who also brought home second team all-conference accolades.
Brewer, who picked up all-conference honors at safety, will anchor the relatively young and inexperienced secondary. Minyard says he hopes to find players to fill the other spots quickly.
On special teams, Mahaffey is back to handle the Scot’s kicking and punting duties.
McKay’s three game pre-season schedule is followed by a CVC road contest in Keizer September 21 against McNary.
