They may not be flashy, but the North Salem Vikings should not be overlooked during the 2007 Central Valley Conference season.   North coach Robert Cary admits that his team is mostly devoid of big stars, especially after the transfer of Travis Dunn to the Portland-area last year.

Still, there is plenty to like about this year’s edition of the Vikings.  Athletic quarterback Juan Benavidez  (6-1 210) is back for his senior season, after learning the varsity game as he went in 2006.  He finished with over a thousand yards passing last year, and Carey hopes to see fewer interceptions and more touchdowns this time around.

There is plenty of veteran protection on the offensive line for Benavidez.  Key returners include seniors  Keegan Rank (6-3 205) and Zach Kirk (6-5 220) at tackles, and Justin Sisco (6-2 230) at guard.  Senior John Chisman (6-3 230) is also to be in the o-line mix.

At the single set back, juniors John Cox (5-11 190) and Josh Kuenzi (6-3 215) will see plenty of action.  At wide receiver, seniors Corbin Garner (5-10 165) and Casey Reyes (5-10 165) will be key contributors after playing some minutes in 2006.

The stingy Viking defense, which gave up the second fewest points in the CVC last year, has experience returnng up front.  On the d-line, Rank, Kirk and Chisman will play on the interior.  Senior Chad Fredericks (6-2 225) will also see time at defensive end.

The experience is much thinner for North at other defensive positions.

Cox, Kuenzi and Trevor Beversdorf (5-9 175) will start at linebacker as juniors.  Garner and Reyes are back at corner, but safeties are still a question mark.

North’s kicking game will be a known quantity as Jesse Manzo is back as punter and placekicker for his senior season.

North’s two game preseason schedule includes a home matchup against South Eugene, and a trip to Bend to play Summit.  The Vikings begin CVC action at home against cross-town rival South Salem on September 21.
