After a less than impressive "week zero" performance, the Central Valley Conference showed great improvement in the traditional first week of Oregon prep football, posting five wins in seven games on Friday.

Sprague 34, McMinnville 20

Sprague broke in their new FieldTurf at Olympic Stadium in a postiive fashion as they scored the last two touchdowns of the game to beat visiting McMinnville.

Sprague got the scoring started with a 55 yard run by Rob Hamlin to take a 7-0 lead. After McMinnville countered with a ten play drive to knot the game at 7.

The Olys had the only scoring in the second quarter as fullback Tony Wilson rambled for touchdowns on runs of 50 and 1 yards respectively. Sprague led 19-7 at halftime.

In the third, the Sprague offensive struggled, and McMinnville took advantage with a pair of one yard TD runs by Bryan Toft. The Grizzlies led 20-19 going into the fourth quarter.

But Sprague closed out the game with 15 unanswered points. Quarterback Adam Kniffin revived the Oly offense with two TD runs of his own (7, 3 yards) and the Sprague defense stifled McMinnville the rest of the way.

Sprague (1-1) will be on the road next Friday--playing Evergreen, Washington, which is now guided by former McNary coach Tom Smythe.

West Salem 42, Barlow 0

The Titans rebounded nicely from last week's narrow loss to Lake Oswego with a decisive home win over Barlow of Gresham.

After fumbling away the football on their opening drive, the Titans marched 88 yards on 8 plays, and scored on a two yard TD run by tailback Jordan Jenkins to take a 7-0 lead. Jenkins had 64 yards on the ground in the drive.

West stretched the lead to 21-0 after a one yard TD run by Thomas Hoover and a 28 yard touchdown pass from Aaron Hire to Jordan Bishop.

Barlow had an opportunity to cut the lead late in the first half, but West's defense turned them back. After driving to the Titan 4 with just over two minutes left in the half, the Bruins were stuffed on two straight running plays and a pass into the end zone was intercepted by a diving Bishop.

The Titans then all but slammed the door on Barlow as Hire hit Bishop with two straight long passes, including a 52 yard strike for a touchdown to give West a 28-0 lead heading into the locker room.

Bishop added a 17 yard TD catch from Hire in the third quarter. He ended the game with 126 yards and three TDs on five catches. Hire threw for 223 yards, and Jenkins had 168 yards rushing as West accumulated nearly 450 yards in total offense.

Landon Kuenzi accounted for the last West Salem score on the return of a fumble by Barlow following Bishop's third quarter TD catch.

West (1-1) entertains Roseburg next Friday.

McNary 35, Sandy 0

The Celtics picked up their second straight win for new coach Rick Ward, matching their victory total for all of last season.

Defensively, McNary was dominating for a second straight week, limiting the host Pioneers to just five first downs and just 110 yards of total offense.

On the offensive side, the Celtics racked up over 450 yards in total yardage. Running back Sam Wilkerson had 109 yards rushing, while sophomore Stephen Rodriguez added 90. Quarterback Brent Williams threw for nearly 200 yards, including 137 yards and 3 TDs to Zach Brown on five receptions. Brown's opening TD catch from Brent Williams--covering 91 yards, started the McNary scoring midway through the first quarter.

McNary returns home next week to host Wilson of Portland in their final preseason match up.

McKay 48, Springfield 27

After struggling to generate last week against Mountain View, the Royal Scots exploded for 7 TDs in their road win at Springfield.

Running back Tony Gonzales had 125 yards rushing on 14 carries, including a 90 yard TD run. He also had an 85 yard kick off return for a touchdown late in the second quarter. Fullback Solomon Frank pitched in with 88 yards on 10 carries, and also had touchdown runs of 8 and 5 yards.

McKay quarterback John Brewer was 5 for 9 for 90 yards, with a 36 yard TD strike to receiver Nasser Abdelrasul.

McKay wraps up preseason play on the road next week against North Medford.

Redmond 42, Bend 14

Last season, Redmond had to go to double-overtime to beat the 5A Lava Bears. This time around, there was no doubt as the Panthers dominated from the opening kickoff to pick up their first win.

Redmond led 21-0 early in the second quarter, thanks to a two yard TD pass from Cody Johnson to Christian Arsenault, and two touchdown runs (13, 2) by Clayton York that were set up by Bend turnovers. After a Bend score, Johnson hooked up with Arsenault again on a 33 yard TD pass to make it 28-7 at half.

The host Lava Bears, behind the strength of running back Josh Gibb, cut the deficit to 28-14 in the third quarter, but York countered with a 17 yard run of his own to seal the win.

York ended the game with 113 yards and three touchdowns, while Johnson threw for 177 yards and two TDs on 11 of 17 passing.

Redmond (1-1) plays at Beaverton next Friday night.

South Eugene 42, North Salem 17

The Vikings had reason to be optimistic in their first contest of the season, trailing the visiting Axemen just 14-10 going into the fourth quarter.

But South Eugene converted a North fumble and three interceptions of quarterback Juan Benavidez into four touchdowns to win comfortably.

North still had plenty of bright spots in their first game. Carlos Reyes, who split time at QB with Benavediz, threw a 20 yard touchdown pass to Jared Lowe for North's first touchdown of the season just before halftime. Reyes also rushed for 102 yards, including an 11 yard run in the fourth quarter.

North Salem travels to Bend next week to play Summit High.

Roseburg 40, South Salem 14

South's opening game against one of Oregon's premier prep football programs started well, but the Saxon defense was worn down by the visiting Indians.

After Roseburg scored the first two touchdowns of the game, South's Matt Cox caught a 54 yard TD pass from Jonathan Sigado to cut the Saxon deficit to 14-7.

Roseburg counted with another long drive to make it 21-7, but Dominic David took the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown to make the score 21-14. Roseburg managed a late field goal to improve their margin to 24-14 at half.

Roseburg's defense put the clamps on South the last two quarters, while scoring 16 unanswered points. The Indians tallied 417 yards in total offense against the young South Salem defense, while the Saxons had just 166 yards.

South running back Corey Bickler was a bright spot, accounting for 69 yards on just 10 carries.

The Saxons host Reynolds of Troutdale next Friday night.
