Other CVC non-league games are routs heading into
league play next week

South Salem and North Salem had a measure of excitement in their last preseason games on Friday night, while the rest of the Central Valley Conference non-league matchups were relative blowouts.

South Salem 13, Reynolds 0

The visiting Raiders had their chances against South Salem, but the Saxon defense came up big in the red zone enroute to the team's first victory of the season.

Junior Jonathan Sigado started at quarterback for South after seeing limited action in the opening game against Roseburg, and seemed comfortable at the helm, throwing a 57 yard TD strike to wideout Zach Dufault with just under ten minutes left in the first quarter to give the Saxons a
7-0 lead.

It was the only touchdown of the game as Josh Kay added the other remaining points for either side with field goals of 40 and 25 yards in the first half.

Neither team scored in the second half, but the South defense limited Reynolds to under 200 yards, including a paltry 55 yards passing thanks to a fierce pass rush.

Offensively for the Saxons, Sigado ended the game 10 of 19 for 201 yards and a touchdown. Matt Cox had four catches for South for 73 yards.

The Saxons (1-1) play at North Salem next Friday to kick off the CVC season.

North Salem 32, Summit 28

The Vikings trailed 28-6 heading into halftime, but came roaring back with 26 unanswered points in the last two quarters to claim the victory on the road in Bend.

Storm quarterback Jeff Nelson shredded the Viking defense for four touchdowns in the first half to wide receiver Matt Meagher, while North got a six yard TD run from quarterback Casey Reyes to keep the game from getting completely out of hand.

In the second half, Corbin Garner sparked North by picking off a Nelson pass and winding his way 98 yards for a touchdown to improve cut the Vik's deficit to 28-12.

It was all Vikings the rest of the game, as Reyes rambled for TDs on runs of 50 and 48 yards, and Brent McGinty added a 3 yard rush for a touchdown. Reyes finished the night with 99 yards rushing on 15 carries, while throwing for another 121 yards.

North (1-1) will entertain South Salem in their CVC opener next Friday.

West Salem 35, Roseburg 7

For a second straight week, the West Salem Titans blasted their non-league opponent to improve to 2-1 entering Central Valley Conference play next week.

Roseburg pounded South Salem last week, but was no match for West--which outgained the visiting Indians by a nearly 7 to 1 margin in the first half, including a margin of 201 yards to 1 in the rushing department.

Tailback Jordan Jenkins started at quarterback for the Titans as Aaron Hire sat out because of minor shoulder injury. Returning to his old position was no problem, as Jenkins rushed for a team best 156 yards and threw for another 76 yards on 6 of 9 passing, including a 32 yard strike to tight end John Gallagher in the first quarter, when the team jumped out to a 21-0 lead.

West played second line players for much of the game, but Roseburg didn't get on the scoreboard until Josh Weaver ran for an 8 yard TD in the fourth quarter.

The Titans had over 300 rushing yards for the game. In addition to Jenkins, Chase Sexton had a big game on the ground with 62 yards on 11 carries. Jordan Bishop had 30 yards and a 9 yard TD scamper, while Thomas Hoover gained 53 yards on 12 carries, wtih two touchdowns.

West begins CVC action next week on the road at Sprague, attempting to beat the Olympians for the first time in school history.

Beaverton 28, Redmond 14

Redmond fell to 1-2 in preseason action, as their high-powered offense was shutout for three quarters on the road at Beaverton.

The host Beavers lead 21 nothing at halftime, as quarterback Michael Dehaan tossed a pair of TD passes, one to Joel Gross for 46 yards, and another to Alex Corona from 15 yards out.

Redmond cut the margin to 21-7 in the third quarter, when Panther quarterback Cody Johnson hit Bo Guthrie with a 16 yard TD pass. But Beaverton responded with another TD pass, this one for 26 yards from Dehaan to Gross.

Redmond closed out the scoring with a late TD pass of 80 yards from Cody Johnson to Taylor Johnson. Cody Johnson ended the night with 140 yards through the air on 7 of 16 passes while contending with a fierce Beaverton pass rush much of the evening. Clayton York rushed for 109 yards on 21 carries for the Panthers.

Redmond has one more preseason game next Friday vs. Milwaukie, before opening conference play on September 28 at South Salem.

McNary 38, Wilson 14

Make it three straight wins to start the season for new McNary head coach Rick Ward.

The host Celtics took advantage of three Wilson turnovers, racing out to a 24-6 halftime lead.

McNary got on the board on a 34 yard field goal by Zach Brown, then added three touchdowns in the second period. Darian Kaufman had a one yard touchdown run, sophomore Stephen Rodriguez scampered in from three yards out, and Brown caught an 18 yard pass from Brent Williams to make it 24-0 Celts late in the second quarter.

McNary added two more touchdowns in the second half, including a 36 yard reverse pass from Rodriguez to Sheldon Austria. Austria also caught a 15 yard TD pass from Williams.

McNary (3-0) opens up Central Valley Conference play at home next Friday against McKay.

North Medford 35, McKay 7

It was a long bus ride to Medford for the McKay Royal Scots, and an even longer football game. The Scots fumbled the ball five times and muffed a punt enroute to the loss to the Black Tornado at Medford's Spiegelberg Studium.

North Medford led 14-0 at half, and the Scots were still in the ballgame. But on their opening drive of the third quarter, the Scots were stopped when Tony Gonzalez was tackled short of the sticks on fourth down near mid field. On the very next play, North Medford quarterback Skyler Mlasko threw a 51 yard TD pass to Quinton Walker to push the lead to 21-0.

Less than two minutes later, McKay fumbled again deep in its own end, and Mlasko threw another TD strike--this one a 12 yarder to Jordan Ellis--to make it 28-0.

McKay finally got on the board when Darnell Harris sprinted 76 yards for a touchdown with just over 9 1/2 minutes left. But an extended drive by the Tornado ending with a 21 yard run by Mlasko put the game away with four minutes to play.

McKay (1-2) travels to McNary to start their conference season next Friday.

Evergreen (WA) 27, Sprague 21 (Thursday)

A meeting between two long-time coaching rivals and friends resulted in an entertaining non-league game on the road for Sprague.

Former McNary coach Tom Smythe, who stepped down last season, is now headman for the Evergreen grid program. The Plainsmen run the same wide open offense that Smythe employed during his years in Keizer.

The two teams played a see-saw first half, as Sprague scored last before halftime to take an 18-12 lead into the locker room.

The host Plainsmen scored two unanswered touchdowns to take a 27-18 lead heading into the final period.

After an interception by Sprague's Tony Wilson of an Evergeen pass, the Olys drove to the Plainsman 16 yard line, before settling for a 33 yard field goal with just under five minutes left in the game.

The Olys had one last chance to win the game after driving to the Evergeen 13 yard line with under ten seconds to play. Coach Robin Hill called for a reverse pass, but the pass by Gabe Synegal to a wide open Colin Casad resulted in Casad falling out of the end zone.

Sprague (1-2) hosts West Salem to open their CVC season next Friday night.
