The front runners keep on winning
South, Sprague, West go to 2-0 on CVC season
October 2 , 2009

One game was close, but projected CVC leaders South Salem, Sprague and West Salem all posted wins to remain atop the conference standings after two games.

South Salem 43, McKay 14

The most anticipated game of the night turned into a rout as South Salem flexed its muscles for a 43-14 victory over McKay.

Fortunes turned sour for the Royal Scots quickly, as on the second play of the game, a fumbled snap set up the Saxons at the McKay 18 yard line. Three plays later, Colby Wall waltzed in on a 5-yard TD scamper and South took the early 7-0 lead.

McKay came back with a nice drive of their own, highlighted by a 35 yard Angel Delao run.  Ian Silbernagel took the ball in from 1-yard out and the game was tied.

South quarterback Connor Lynch was on target all night, hitting 14-19 passes for 231 yards and a couple of touchdowns, his first going to Wall on a 13-yard swing pass and a 14-7 Saxon lead.  South tacked on one more score before intermission, Wall’s third TD of the game, coming on a 3-yard run.

South kept McKay pinned back in its own territory throughout the game, and the Royal Scots struggled to put together sustained drives.

The third quarter belonged to South as they put up three touchdowns to seal the game with a 40-7 lead. Delao had a solid rushing game for McKay finishing with 117 yards on 21 carries.  The passing game was inconsistent though as Silbernagel hit on just five of 13 passes for 60 yards and one late score.

Next week, South will travel to McNary for a Thursday game. McKay plays a non-league contest at Milwaukie

Sprague 42, McNary 24

Sprague jumped to an early 21-0 lead against visiting McNary and cruised to the win over a young Celtics squad.

Chad Coburn notched four touchdowns on the night for Sprague, including an 18 yard run to give Sprague a 7-0 lead with 4:45 left in the first quarter.

Coburn also added a six yard touchdown scamper, a two yard TD pass from quarterback Jeff Kidd, and a 97 yard run early in the second quarter to push Sprague to a 42-17 lead. He finished the game with 160 yards on ten carries and caught six passes for 80 yards.

McNary did perform respectively for the game, recording over 300 yards of offense. Quarterback Kyle Ismay threw for 213 yards on 14 of 29 passes, and running back Tyler Gordon had 70 yards on six carries, including touchdown runs of 46 and 16 yards.

The third-ranked Olympians (4-0) play at West Salem next Friday against #8 West Salem. McNary will host South Salem.

West Salem 35 , North Salem 28

Winless North Salem scored two late touchdowns to make things interesting, but came up just short in an upset bid at West Salem.

West Salem led just 21-14 at half, as the scrappy Vikings cashed in on Titan turnovers to record a pair of TDs--a one yard run by Robert Eason, and a 14 yard pass from Cole Ferguson to Sam Lyon.

But West--ranked eighth in the state going into the contest--scored 14 points in the third quarter. Titan running back Sal Herrera, who finished with 115 yards on 17 carries--scored on a nine yard TD run, and back up quarterback Phil Tolley--filling in for the still-injured Brett Smith--hit Cole Pittman with an 8 yard touchdown pass to push the Titan advantage to 35-14.

But North would not go away. Ferguson engineered a 66 yard drive early midway through the fourth quarter, diving in from one yard out to make it 35-21.

West fumbled the ball deep in North territory, giving the Vikings another opportunity. Ferguson hit senior Drew Bolliger with a 48 yard touchdown pass with just under a minute to play to move to within 35-28. But West recovered the onside kick attempt to seal the win.

West (2-0) hosts Sprague next Friday in a CVC showdown of top 10 teams. North Salem (0-2) will be home to entertain Redmond.

Note: Redmond had a bye and did not play this week
