Blow outs in CVC week six
McKay clinches playoff berth
There is the slimmest of chances it could change, but the Central Valley Conference seedings for the Oregon 6A football playoffs are essentially set following the CVC's week six contests
McKay 47, McNary 14
For a second straight year, McKay is headed to the post season. The Royal Scots used an early defensive stop and quick touchdown to seize the momentum in their easy win at McNary.
The Celtics, playing a little shorthanded due to the flu bug, drove to the McKay four yard line to start the ball game, where they faced a fourth down and three. Scots defensive end Joey Fennimore ended the threat when he sacked McNary quarterback Dan Hockanson.
McKay took over and just three plays later, quarterback Ian Silbernagel galloped 79 yards for a touchdown and an early 6-0 lead.
It was just the start of things to come, as the visiting Scots recorded three more TDs in the half to race out to a 26-0 lead.
McKay intercepted Hockanson three times in the first half, while Silbernagel added another TD run of 91 yards, and a pair of TD passes--a 40 yarder to Spencer Blackman and a five yard strike to Majed Abdelrasul.
McKay led 47-0 in the fourth quarter before McNary tallied two late touchdowns for the final margin of victory.
Silbernagel finished the game with 186 yards rushing on just four carries, and added another 152 yards through the air on 11 of 13 passing.
McKay (3-2) locked up the number four seed out of the CVC with the victory, and has the slimmest of chances to grab the number three spot if they beat West Salem next week and Sprague loses at winless Redmond. McNary (1-4) wraps up their season at North Salem.
West Salem 51, Redmond 36
The game was not as close as the final score might indicate, as the sixth ranked Titans raced out to a 22-0 lead and cruised to the victory over visiting Redmond--clinching their second Central Valley Conference crown in three seasons.
West forced the Panthers to punt on their first three possessions and then took little more than five minutes of clock time and just 12 plays to tally their first three TDs.
Sal Herrera had TD runs of 40 and 32 yards, and Cole Pittman recovered a Brett Smith fumble in the end zone for the early advantage.
Redmond finally got on the board with 13 seconds left in the opening quarter on a 34 yard run, but West had the final say as Smith hit a wide open Phil Tolley with a 67 yard TD pass as time expired in the period for a 29-8 lead.
Herrera added another 32 yard TD scamper and Smith hooked up with John Herring on a 2 yard TD pass to make it 43-8 Titans at half. West Salem outgained Redmond 412 yards to 90 in the first two quarters.
West coach Shawn Stanley went with subs to start the second half and Redmond took advantage, scoring three straight TDs to cut the West margin to 43-29 with six minutes left in the game.
The Titans starting offense was reinserted, and Smith hooked up with Tolley on a 48 yard TD less than a minute later to make it 41-29. Welsh ended the scoring for Redmond with a one yard TD with two minutes remaining.
Smith threw for 232 yards and four touchdowns on just six of eight passing, and added another 94 yards rushing on seven carries. Herrera had 12 carries for 133 yards and three TDs. Welsh finished with 118 yards on 21 carries for Redmond.
West (5-0) plays at McKay next Friday to conclude the regular season, and will get a first round bye in the playoffs. Redmond will entertain Sprague to close out their year.
South Salem 51, North Salem 28
A fast start at home helped propel the Saxons to the win and assured them of the second playoff seed out of the CVC. In their last game until the playoffs--the Saxons have a bye next week--South scored quickly, covering 79 yards in just four plays and 40 seconds. Quarterback Conor Lynch threw a 37 yard TD pass to Travis Koon to make it 7-0.
South added three more unanswered TDs on the Viking defense.
A pass from Junior Espitia out of the wildcat formation to tight end Jake Withnell, a seven yard catch by Mark Mason from Lynch, and another TD pass for Lynch to Chad Conner.
North finally got on the board midway through the quarter on a one yard run by QB Cole Ferguson, but South replied quickly as Lynch hit Espitia for a 73 yard TD pass and a 35-7 lead at half.
North cut the margin to 35-14 when Jonny Garza scored on a ten yard run on North's first drive of the third quarter, but South scored two straight TDs in response on an 18 yard pass from Lynch to Koon and a four yard Jake Fohn run.
Garza had an 84 yard TD run late in the third to make it 48-21 at the end of three quarters, and the two teams added a touchdown each in the fourth for the final score.
Lynch threw for 248 yards on the night for South, completing 13 of 18 passes. Fohn rushed for 173 yards on 17 carries. For North, Garza rushed 13 times for a season-high 217 yards.
South (5-1) will host the Mount Hood Conference's number four seed in two weeks after their bye next Friday. North (1-4) wraps up their season at home against McNary.
Of note: Sprague cancelled their non-league game at Lake Oswego after a flu outbreak decimated the team this week.
