2010 CENTRAL VALLEY CONFERENCE
FOOTBALL PREVIEW

MCKAY
Coach: Jay Minyard, 6th year
2009: 3-3 (4-5)-4th place/CVC
Lost to Jesuit in 6A playoffs/first round

It may seem like the same old song, but McKay coach Jay Minyard seems to face the identical problem every season: enough players at the right positions to have a successful year.

Things are no different in 2010, as the Royal Scots bring some promising talent to the gridiron, but lack depth for the grind of a complete football season.

Minyard remains ever the optimist, and will adjust McKay's offensive and defensive schemes to make the most of the personnel he has at his disposal.

OFFENSE

Scots senior quarterback Ian Silbernagel (6-2 195) may be the best athlete in the Central Valley Conference. He returns as a three year starter and a legitmate double threat. Last season, Silbernagel threw for nearly 1,000 yards, completing 55 percent of his passes. He also averaged over 6 1/2 yards per carry in rushing for just under 650 yards.

The Scots will line up in more spread formations this season and utilize a short passing game. Silbernagel's primary receivers will include returning seniors Majed Abddelrasul (5-10 170)--who had 25 catches last year--and Spencer Blackman (5-8 165). Minyard also expects major contributions from speedy seniors Ian Brooks (5-9 160) and Action Aiashy (5-5 130).

The offensive line will be anchored by seniors Chad Powell (6-0 210) and Andy Smittle (6-1, 225)--a second team all conference selection. Joining them will be center Zeke Abundes (5-7 195 Sr.), a converted running back. Players expected to compete for time on the line include seniors Weston McGrath (6-0 220) and John Boedigheimer (5-10 200), and junior Tobias Reese-Helms (6-0 215).

Petr Danchev (5-7 185 Sr.) is the lone returning running back. He rushed for over 300 yards in 2009.

DEFENSE

If the defensive line can develop quickly, Minyard is hoping for another strong season on that side of the football. Smittle and Reese Helms will provide size on the d-line, as will junior Dalton Brown (6-2 210).

Powell and Danchev return at inside linebacker to provide experience in the middle for the Scots. On the outside, Brooks--an honorable all-conference pick--and senior Taylor Smith (5-9 180) will bring athleticism to the linebacking corps.

In the secondary, Minyard will have Abdelrasul and Blackman at the corners, and Silbernagel roaming the field at free safety.
