2010 CENTRAL VALLEY CONFERENCE
FOOTBALL PREVIEW

MCNARY
Coach: Rick Ward, 4th year
2009: 1-5 (3-6)-6th place/CVC

2009 was a rough season for the McNary Celtics.

Coach Rick Ward's crew struggled to a 1-5 record, and endured the end of the season with the loss of key seniors for the final three games.

However, many underclassmen got some late season experience, and the Celtics will have players up from last year's JV squad that won seven games last year. It will make for an interesting 2010.

OFFENSE

McNary's field general is back, looking for a productive senior season. Kyle Ismay (6-4 215) is hoping to generate more offense for a Celtic team that averaged under 20 points a ball game in 2009.

Fullback/wingback Wes Heredia (6-0 240 Sr.) will provide power to the McNary running game, while senior transfer Tim McDowell (5-9 165) should add some speed. McDowell was a district high jump and 400 meter champion at 4A Sweet Home High School last year, and averaged over seven yards a carry for the Huskies' playoff football squad.

The receiving corps for the Celtic spread offensive attack has a mix of youth and experience. Junior Garren Robinette (6-1 175) and senior James Lowells (5-8 170) saw increased action at the end of last season. He will be joined by athletic Spencer Rice (6-4 190 Sr.), junior Justin Gardener (5-8 150) and sophomore Cody Bond (5-8 150). Junior Anthony Davis (6-3 210) has transferred from North Salem and should see time at slot receiver.

The front line will be led by returning starter Jared VanCleave (6-0 195 Sr.). Other expected starters in 2010 include seniors Alex Willeford (6-1 200) and Zac Davidson (5-11 230). Several juniors should be also see playing time, including Kyle Blank (6-3 275), Joel Hunter (6-1 230), Anthony Flores (6-0 220), and Todd Hatley (6-0 200).

DEFENSE

Two-way players will be the rule for many positions on the defensive side for McNary.

Van Cleave, Willeford, Davidson, Hunter and Flores are among those mentioned by Coach Ward as d-line contributors.

Heredia returns at inside linebacker, and will be joined in the middle at times by Van Cleave, Davis, and junior Brandon McGoffna (6-0 200). On the outside, Willeford will see some time, with support from seniors Kyle Knight (6-2 195) and Stevin Urban (5-11 175).

In the secondary, the corners will be staffed by committee--including Lowells, Robinette (an HM all-conference selection last year), Bond, Gardener, and Michael Gerisinenko (5-8 170 Jr.).

Rice is penciled at free safety, and junior Tim Self (5-9 180) is the favorite at strong safety.

OTHER

McNary will have junior Gonzolo Cervantes (5-8 210) at their disposal as a place kicker. He handled PAT duties late last year for the Celtics.
